It's time to impeach Donald Trump

On Tuesday, August 9th, President Donald Trump threatened North Korea with “fire and fury like the world has never seen.”  His words echoed those of President Harry Truman right after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima 72 years ago, and are a clear reference to a nuclear attack.

The North Korean military’s response a few hours later was to threaten a ballistic missile strike on Andersen Air Force Base in Guam to “send a serious warning signal to the U.S.”  Trump’s effort to cow the North Koreans with over-the-top bellicosity certainly hasn’t had the intended effect, as anyone who has paid attention to the North Korean regime over the years could have predicted.

Trump and the North Korean military spokesmen exhibit all the thoughtfulness and maturity of seventh grade boys who believe their manhood has been called into question.  It would be funny, except for the fact that both sides have the firepower – both nuclear and conventional - to incinerate hundreds of thousands of North Korean, South Korean, and North American civilians in a matter of minutes.

China has made the sensible proposal of a freeze for a freeze: a freeze on further missile tests on the part of the North Koreans, and a freeze on military exercises with South Korea on the part of the U.S.  This would serve the admirable purpose of getting both sides to the negotiating table.  Unfortunately, Trump has so far ignored China’s proposal.  He seems bent on provoking an international crisis that will make him appear presidential and distract attention from the scandals and domestic policy failures that have plagued his administration to date.

We must not fall for this ploy.  Strength Through Peace calls on Congressman Jared Polis to introduce articles of impeachment in the House of Representatives based on Trump’s reckless endangerment of the U.S. and Korean civilian populations.  We urge your readers to join us in making this simple demand by contacting Polis’s office via this link: https://polis.house.gov/forms/writeyourrep/.
