Will the 53 year old trade embargo be next?

On April 14th, President Obama announced that he intends to remove Cuba from a list of countries the U.S. claims are state sponsors of terrorism. The Cuban Government has maintained that it never belonged on such a list in the first place. This move will help clear the path toward restoring full diplomatic relations between the two countries, which both Presidents Obama and Raul Castro have stated they wish to see happen soon.

At the salon on April 24th, we will view a "Democracy Now" clip in which Amy Goodman interviews former Cuban ambassador Carlos Alzugaray Treto about the thaw in U.S. - Cuba relations. Afterward, Kevin Cross, who traveled to Cuba in 2009 with the group "Pastors for Peace", will lead a discussion concerning the significance of this change. It is quite possible that the U.S. trade embargo, imposed by President Kennedy in 1962, will be the next cold war policy to be cast off after diplomatic relations are restored.

Salon duc Tape, a public forum sponsored by Strength Through Peace, meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from 7:00 -- 9:00 p.m. at the Fort Collins Mennonite Fellowship, located at 300 East Oak Street. Coffee, tea, and light snacks are provided. For more information, email Strength Through Peace, or call us at 419-8944.
